University students enroll to alleviate blood shor

Over 300 students of Mzumbe University in Morogoro have enrolled to voluntarily donate blood and help alleviate the blood shortage that has of late hit most hospitals countrywide. This was during a one-day Tanzania Red Cross Society (TRCS) mobilization and sensitization session yesterday that was held at the University.
The students’ commitment comes a couple weeks after TRCS conceded reports of some unscrupulous medical workers selling blood, a development that was feared to worsen the availability of an already scarce commodity in hospitals countrywide.
TRCS as a lead government agency of blood donation mobilization in 11 regions, said measures were put in place by the ministry of health to handle the situation and deal with culprits accordingly.
“The society reported the complaint of blood selling to the ministry. We are confident that it’s playing the due role to end the vise. And we have also put up our own means to make sure that no blood including the one we are getting from Mzumbe students reaches the targeted population,”, said the Morogoro TRCS regional coordinator, Willy Mathew
Students who also enrolled as Red Cross Volunteers in the region pledged to cooperate with the society to make sure that blood shortage in the country becomes history.
“We shall work closely with TRCS to ensure that all higher learning institutions in the region are reached to not only mobilize blood donation, but also mobilize them to volunteer for the society”, students council President, Isaac Uswege said.
He added, “I and colleagues shall work hard to ensure that before the end of the month of August we have established a Red Cross Club with not less than 500 fully paid up members. And all of them must be active in this mobilization. What we need is TRCS blessing and to avail us with necessary training and relevant learning materials.
Uswege who has meanwhile volunteered to head the Red Cross club at the campus in mobilization for TRCS said students have overwhelmingly liked Red Cross and are very eager to straight away start working with the society closely.
In another development, the Mzumbe University Deputy Vice Chancellor-Administration, Prof. Faustine Kamuzora also said that he will personally donate blood as it’s not his first time and to volunteer working closely with the society in mobilizing support of humanity at the campus and beyond.
“I personally cherish Red Cross commitment in response to disasters and I pledge to donate blood and also assist where I am asked for the success TRCS as an auxiliary to the government.
End.
